Book OnePax Camilla, the wife of Agathon Helladius, was staring at her husbands mausoleum in the great city of Rome with tears streaming down her face. She wonders how did it come down to this, why did he have to die this way?20 Years EarlierThe City of SpartaThere is a meeting going on in Sparta, news has reached the leaders of the Greek cities of Rome's plans for a second invasion into Greece. The first invasion was repelled at Thebes by Agathon Helladius the greatest general ever to come out of Athens. Agathon speaks to the leaders. "Brothers, it appears as though Rome has not learned from their first attempt to invade our lands. This letter we have intercepted proves that Rome has plans once again to invade our lands at the Great City of Thebes. Zeus will not let them succeed. This time we have to defeat them for good!" The Greek leaders rallied behind Agathon, they organized a plan to have several messengers ready to race from Thebes to the other great cities once Roman ships were in view of Thebes. After the meeting the leaders sent off for their home cities. Agathon knew this battle would be a trial no matter how confident he seemed. He approached his right hand man, Diogenes, and told him to take the men to Athens and in the event that the notice was received while he was away to take the men to Thebes. Agathon set off for the Oracle at Delphi to receive a prophecy. Agathon began his 3 day journey to Delphi and as he arrived he walked up to the top and greeted the Oracle. "Hail great prophet." The Oracle looked up at Agathon and closed his eyes. "You have come for a prophecy during war times, have you not?" Agathon looked confused at the Oracle's statement. "I am a great general of Greece, every time is war time for me." The Oracle laughed and grinned. "This is true, fine then. As great as you are for you allies you will be even greater for your enemies. This is your prophecy." Agathon was taken aback by the statement and was curious as to what the Oracle meant but knew to ask him was a waste of time. The gods would only tell him what they wanted him to hear. Agathon began to make his way back to Athens and hoped that they had not already left. As Agathon rode into the city of Athens he noticed it was fairly empty. He got of his horse and went into the city center and asked one of his officials where the army had gone, to which the official responded. "They have left sir, to go to Thebes in it's defense." Agathon sighed, he had missed his chance to be a hero once again, but it was all for the good of Greece that they did not wait for him. Still he wondered how many Diogenes left for defense of the city. "How many has Diogenes left for defense?" "200 sir." The official said immediately Agathon's eyes widened. "200! Is he nuts, what if the romans send a second fleet here?" "Nonsense sir the Thebans said the fleet was to big for there to be another. I am sure Diogenes wouldn't have left 200 here if he thought that there was a chance that the romans may send a counter force." The official said in response. Agathon sat down at the center table and sighed. "I sure hope you are right."The City of ThebesDiogenes arrived at Thebes will the army of Athens and greeted the Theban King, Demosthenes, with a bow and a smile. Demosthenes looked concerned. "Where is Agathon?" He asked. "He went to visit the Oracle, he trusted me to command his army in his absence." Diogenes said eagerly. Demosthenes sighed and set up camp near the beach waiting for the Romans to sail onto the beach. After one night the Roman Ships were finally at the beach, the Thebans and Athenians suited up, Sparta and Corinth had not answered the call, as the first roman ship hit the shore the Greeks braced themselves only to have nothing happen. They approached the ships and looked inside. There were no Romans! Diogenes and Demosthenes looked at each in astonishment, the Romans had tricked them, where could they be headed!.The City of AthensAgathon heard a horn sound throughout Athens. He climbed out of bed and met his officials outside the door. "It's the romans!" The officials said. Agathon ran up to the top of the Athenian Walls and looked out towards the seas. There they were, two thousand Roman ships all headed towards the city of Athens. Agathon's jaw dropped towards the floor. He knew that he was doomed along with the city of Athens.
